Post-War Housing Need

London faced a severe housing shortage following the Second World War, leading to large-scale council house building programmes. Industrial areas such as Ponders End began transitioning toward residential development.

Construction of the Alma Estate

The Alma Estate was constructed as part of post-war housing expansion using modernist planning principles. The development included approximately 717 homes, four tower blocks (Kestrel, Cormorant, Merlin, and Curlew House), and local shops along South Street.

Established Community

The estate became home to a diverse and growing population, reflecting wider demographic changes in the area. Over time, challenges emerged including ageing buildings, maintenance issues, and economic decline in surrounding industries.

Local Regeneration Begins
